Well, I wouldn't say it's a bad idea, because it works fine. All I had was a X-9 mech, it might work better with say a Shimano mech... The best solution would ofcourse be to have a 6 speed mech! ;)

I used the ones that comes with singlespeed kits, but I think you can use the spacers that comes with some bottom brackets (Shimano Hollowtech and so on)... I just tightend the stopscrew all the way. If you get a longer screw, it will crash against the body of the rear mech. (At least on the X-9 it will).

No, I use a normal X9/X0 setup with KMC X9SL chain. I just removed the 3 top cogs and adjusted the stopscrews on the rear mech! I can still shift "over" the last cogs, so it's not perfect, but it works!

Yeah, I think so. I ran them for 3 seasons, and only changed 2 or 3 spokes... Depends on your riding style really. If you ride smooth and loose, they're perfect, but if you monstertruck down the course, buy something else! ;)
